A. The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles will reduce by a maximum of four points the accumulated total on a driver's record for the successful completion of an Accident Prevention Course. Points remain on the driver's record, but they are not counted by the DMV when determining further administrative action against a license. Point reduction does not affect suspensions or revocations already in place, and it does not affect mandatory actions against a license.

A. Motorists may take an Accident Prevention Course once every eighteen months for a four-point reduction.

Q. Will I get an insurance discount for taking a New York Accident Prevention Course? back to top

A. Successful completion of an Accident Prevention Course provides a 10% reduction, for three years, in the base rate of a motorist's current automobile liability, no-fault, and collision premiums. A course may be completed every three years in order to maintain the discount. The person completing the course must be the principle operator of the insured vehicle in order to be eligible for the premium reduction.

Q. How long does it take to complete a New York Accident Prevention Course? back to top

A. A New York Accident Prevention Course is required to last at least 6 hours, and a classroom course will meet for that amount of time (excluding a 30-minute lunch break). If you take the course online, you are free to complete the course at your own pace (beyond the 6-hour minimum), but you must finish it within 30 days of starting. The computer tracks your completed chapters as you proceed through the course. If you log out and then sign back in, you'll be taken to the "Student Center" page. There you'll be able to continue with the course where you left off, and you'll have access to completed chapters for review.

A. You may re-enter the Internet course via the link on the homepage as many times as necessary to complete the program. If you are having problems accessing the course, you may contact technical support by calling 877-689-0674.

Q. Will I be tested on the material? back to top

A. You do not need to pass a final examination in order to successfully complete New York's Low Cost Accident Prevention Course.

Q. How does the DMV know that I completed your course? back to top

A. Your completion is electronically reported to the DMV.

Q. Do you mail a Certificate of Completion to me? back to top

A. We send Certificates of Completion directly from our office to you. Normally this process can take anywhere from 5 - 10 business days, but we do offer expedited mailing options. You may also order a duplicate copy of your Certificate. If you ever have a question about your Certificate, we're here to help!

A. Unfortunately, there is a small cost to take an Accident Prevention Course. Tuition covers all of the elements of a course, including immediate access to the website (if appropriate) and the regular processing of your traffic school Certificate of Completion. There are no additional costs or surcharges. Accident Prevention Courses are presented by privately operated businesses; whether you sit in a class or choose an online program, you will need to pay a similar fee.
